The most Frequent Request for 'Class 1 and O' Wood Protection - example on bare timber

Apply Intumescent Timber Paint - one 2.5kg pack will cover approximately 13 square metres per coat.

Apply Flame Paint Finish - one 2.5 litre pack will cover 25 square metres per coat.

Example - bare timber or wood composite boards (e.g. MDF, plywood, chipboard) with two coats at 7 square metres per litre, for indoor domestic dry use, to be covered when finished. If it is to be exposed to wear, or view, you will also require Flame Paint finish, (one or two coats), available in BS and RAL colours and a choice of finishes. Always apply two coats for high humidity areas (like kitchens) or for outdoor use.

Use Intumescent Timber paint for bare or previously painted timber and timber based board, for surfaces where the surface spread of flame, or fire propagation and penetration need to be controlled.


When exposed to a fire Intumescent Timber Paint expands to create a fire resilient barrier, insulating and protecting the timber surfaces from heat and the oxygen required for fire.

SAFE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF WOOD FOR 30 Minute Standard (does not apply to Class 1 and Class O)

Panels need to be at least 10mm thick. If the wood is less than this thicknesses it can be supplemented with additional panelling - we will be pleased to Quote for precision panels made to measure for your project.


Prepare the surfaces and apply Intumescent Timber Paint to Class 1 and Class 0, or 30 or 60 Minutes.

Then, if not to be covered over, apply one or two coats of Flame Paint (in matt, gloss, eggshell, vinyl silk or metallic finish) according to Manufacturer's instructions.


Tested to BS476 Part 7; Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame.

BS476 Part 6; Fire propagation.

Designated Class 0 in accordance with U.K. Building Regulations.


We will issue a Certificate of Supply upon request for each project for Insurance, Fire and Building Control Authority and Client Records.


Intumescent Timber Paint can be overcoated with the following decorative finishes:

Flame Paint - top coatings:

Gloss, Eggshell, Vinyl Silk, Acrylic Eggshell - all BS and RAL Colours

Anti-graffiti system - most BS4800 colours.

Metallic Finishes - steel, gunmetal, rust, silver, gold.


Class 1 and Class 0: Apply 2 coats of Intumescent Timber Paint at 7m sq. per litre per coat.


Apply in 2 coats by brush or roller or spray.

Airless spray – Graco 1500 or 5000 with 0.015" tip.

Pressure pot – Devilbiss J.G.A 502 gun, 402-FF needle, 705 aircap, FF nozzle.


Allow a minimum of 4 hours between Intumescent Base coats, 10 hours before applying a Flame Paint finish coat to the last base coat, 4 hours between water based Flame paint finish coats and 12 hours between Gloss coats of Flame Paint finish. Intumescent paints will not withstand high humidity or rainwater - they must be protected with a fully dried top coat before exposure to the elements.
